Thought Revolution: How to Unlock Your Inner Genius

Why is it so difficult to come up with truly new ideas?

This is the question I set out to answer for myself more than a decade ago. My research led me to write Thought Revolution: How to Unlock Your Inner Genius (Changing Lives Press, March 2012) to help both businesses and individuals access their untapped potential. I am currently working on a revised edition with a planned release date in mid-2014 through my new publisher Simon & Schuster, where I delve even deeper into how this methodology applies to the business world.

My book debuted in a dramatic fashion making all the major Best Seller lists including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Publisher’s Weekly. I am currently working on a revised edition with a planned release date in mid-2014 through my new publisher Simon and Schuster.

This groundbreaking book (based on Dr. Roger Sperry’s Nobel Prize winning discovery in 1981 regarding the independence of brain function between the left and right hemispheres) begins where other books in the field end. In it, I offer a proven, easy methodology for finding one’s own creativity by tapping into the right brain, literally, in order to pull out the information needed to make better decisions.

The mystique surrounding creativity and intuition is shattered. Having been a 'left brainer' for most of my life - thinking mostly in linear, analytical and logical fashion. Fourteen years ago, I discovered how to tap into my right brain and revolutionized my life. I gained important insights about my personal life, which I also successfully applied to my professional life.

I was curious if the methodology I learned could apply to others, so I spent three years, with some assistance from the psychological and neuro-scientific communities, interviewing hundreds of test subjects to determine if they could apply the methodology to tap into their right brains to help them break through barriers and obstacles to gain insights into their inner geniuses. The journey resulted in many of the stories that make up the book.

Thought leaders agree that in order to compete in the global economy of the 21st Century, it is imperative that we think creatively to boost innovation. The problem: Neither the neuroscientists nor the thought leaders are giving us what we really need -- the how to -- how to think differently -- how to use our innate creativity -- how to tap into our inborn intuition.

How It Works

The process in Thought Revolution is simple. It involves using an individual's non-dominant hand as the neural pathway to right brain. Thought Revolution becomes the guidebook for all those who become paralyzed at hearing the word "creative."

This science-based methodology is presented through thought-provoking, easy-to-do prompts and exercises which help the reader connect more fully to his or her subconscious right brain and unlock the hidden wisdom contained there.

People who have used this technique report that by applying it at work they were able to:

  • discover and utilize untapped creative problem-solving abilities
  • create breakthroughs in their careers
  • improve relationships
  • reduce stress

Similarly, in their personal lives many were able to:

  • maintain better physical health
  • discover hidden talents
  • gain deeper spiritual awareness
  • heal from trauma
  • access inner wisdom
  • connect with a higher power

When I first began developing this methodology, I did not imagine this pursuit would take my life in an entirely new direction. Since then, however, my personal exploration has evolved into a passion for showing business people how to generate innovative solutions through a process that is revolutionizing the way businesses operate.

Fresh Ideas! Get your fresh, hot, new ideas here!

Many organizations spend time doing strategic planning with little time spent on strategic thinking. Typical analysis, such as SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats), has been used so often it actually defines the “box” we keep trying “to think outside of.”

No wonder it seems nearly impossible to disrupt complacent, conventional thinking and apply fresh, creative, innovative thinking to a company’s existing course and strategy. And yet, it is possible!

I teach people how to activate their brains and think in a completely different way—to unlock the part of the brain considered helpful for problem solving and creativity: the right hemisphere.

Let me show you how. There are several options for working with me.

  • Ideation Sessions

    For optimal results!

Ideation is the process of coming up with new ideas. I will teach your team how to remove the typical barriers of where and how to look for them by revealing a limitless source. These high-energy sessions can be used for any type of problem solving activity, not simply the requisite three-to-five year strategic planning meeting.

I have conducted these sessions for small to global-sized organizations, for teams of as few as 4 and as many as 200 with impressive results.

“I’ve owned Crown Vision Center for 19 years, one of the most productive days we’ve had as a company was the four hour day we spent with you. Our 43 managers were completely engaged in your process and I was astounded the six big ideas surfacing resulted in a 20% bottom line improvement—right in the middle of a recession.”

    Matt Matthews
    CEO, Crown Vision Centers
(Chain of Lasik centers in the Midwest)

Experience the magic-turned-reality first hand with a customized ideation session for your business. Ideation sessions can be scheduled in four-hour, one-day and two-day formats.

  • Executive Development

    Unlock insights for greater success!

I learned first-hand the key to personal and professional growth is self-awareness... the proverbial “going within.” But the process of self-discovery can be elusive, especially in the time-starved world executives operate in. That’s why I created this scientifically based program specifically for busy business leaders.

In this program you will tackle your specific concerns and generate actionable ideas for resolving them.

"Bill's passionate, intelligent, and personable: He leads you to insights, helps you understand the implications, and demonstrates how to make them meaningful. The result – significant and directional change in both your personal and professional life."

  • Keynotes

For an engaging introduction to Right Brain thinking!

This entertaining, high-energy presentation demonstrates what is possible through employing a practical yet revolutionary way of thinking and problem solving. Audiences participate in simple exercises and walk out with powerful takeaways they can immediately apply to their lives. Inspiring, real-world examples of people who overcame both personal and professional hurdles by putting this process into action further illustrate the value of the process.

As a diverse chamber of commerce, we are always encouraging our members to think differently about leadership and business. For our annual business conference, we couldn't have found a better or more appropriate advocate for helping our members think about their personal and professional lives in a new and unique way. Thanks to Bill's insights and exercises, our members learned a valuable technique and can actually practice thinking differently and generating innovative ideas. Bill's personable style and real life examples only added to the overall value of the experience and I'm speaking on behalf of a number of attendees when I say that we're very grateful for his time and energy.

How to Think Differently in 4 Simple Steps (by Accessing Your Right Brain)

Friday, April 18, 2014

 1. Write this question (or any question you are struggling with) using your dominant hand: If I stay on my current path, where will I end up?

2. Still using your dominant hand, write down whatever answers come to mind.

Now, for a completely different perspective, unlock what may be waiting for you in your right brain.

 3. Place the pen in your non-dominant hand. This step will activate the neural pathways to the right hemisphere of your brain. Take a few seconds to clear your mind; don't think about what your answer will be. Suspend judgment and trust an answer to flow from your brain’s right hemisphere through the neural pathways to your non-dominant hand and onto the page. Close your eyes, and take a couple of deep breaths. Open your eyes.

4. Re-read the question. Now answer with your non-dominant hand. Remember not to judge the quality of the response by the likely poor quality of your handwriting.

In our conventional thought process, we tend to think about and evaluate possible answers before choosing one to write down. When our right brain is activated (by holding something in our non dominant hand; it does not have to be a pen), typically we zero in very quickly on the ONE answer we may NEVER have come up with otherwise – a truly, fresh, different response from a truly, fresh different thinking process. Tapping into the right hemisphere of the brain cuts through the clutter and judgment that plagues our usual thought process and quickly reveals bold answers to tough questions that may have gone unmasked and unanswered for years.

Try this as a team exercise. Participants can answer the questions individually and then share their responses with the group. As with any ideation session, to get the greatest benefit, all team members should be encouraged to present their results as equally valid of consideration. The group can then come to consensus on which one(s) to pursue.

This exercise can begin to bring greater clarity to your aspirations and reduce confusion around what is holding you back. You will likely discover that simply waiting long enough is not going to get you where you want to go.

The Myth of the Value of Age and Experience

Thursday, March 20, 2014

For years, a widely accepted “truism” of many businesses and organizations has been that effective leadership has to come from within the ranks of those who have paid their dues for decades within a company. In hiring from within, based on employees’ seniority and past success, a company definitely reaps the advantage of institutional memory in facing the future. Is this enough in today’s competitive marketplace, however? Is corporate America excluding the best shot for innovative solutions by reserving spots in brainstorming and strategy sessions for only the most senior (and oldest) members of the team? Read full article...

Meet William A. Donius

My methods literally teach people to think differently – and I get that taking on this idea may require a small leap of faith and some due diligence on your part. So here is the pertinent information about me. And here you can read about the science behind what I teach.

Where I got my business training…

I come from a banking family and rose through the ranks of corporate America to become Chairman and CEO of Pulaski Bank in St. Louis. I had the privilege of leading the bank through a successful initial public offering in 1998 and am proud to have been a part of its growth eight-fold in size to $1.4 billion in assets. Pulaski Bank was ranked one of the top performing small banks in the country by SNL Financial, voted Best Place to work in St. Louis in 2007 by the St. Louis Business Journal, and received a Torch Award in 2008 from the Better Business Bureau for excellence in ethics and customer service.

After stepping down as CEO in 2008, I stayed on as Chairman, serving on the board of directors for an additional three years. During that time, I was appointed to a two-year term on the U.S. Federal Reserve Board-TIAC Council in Washington, D.C., with Ben Bernanke as Chairman.

Why I developed this methodology…

As a typical left-brained business guy, I was used to solving problems the only way I knew how: with logic and reason. But when I had a problem in my personal life that my tried-and-true methods could not resolve, I sought help. That led me to the discovery of a little-known area of science that sheds light on how our brains work and what we are missing out on through our traditional ways of thinking and problem-solving.

Eventually, I realized that what I’d learned had not only helped me in my personal life, but it was also powerful and useful in my business life. As a result, my exploration has evolved into a passion for teaching people this process, which is revolutionizing the way businesses operate.

Over the past year since the release of my book, Thought Revolution, I have been quite busy teaching others what I've learned:

  • Guest on both National (Fox & Friends) as well as local television shows
  • Guest on numerous radio programs including NPR
  • Speaking at conferences for a number of industries including banking, oil and gas and marketing
  • Teaching strategic Ideation Sessions (workshops) to help both small and Fortune 500 companies disrupt conventional and complacent thinking to produce innovative solutions (Click here to find out how to hire me!)

Testimonials

“I worked with Bill Donius over the past years to uncover both personal and professional insights through right brain exploration. With each engagement, I am amazed at how much I learn.

In January of 2013, Bill took my agency (a brand development firm) through an Ideation session to incite fresh thinking for the year ahead. With no expectations about an outcome, I participated because I thought the exercise, based on my previous experience with his methodology in coaching sessions, would serve as a good team building exercise. We explored our history and untapped perspectives to gain alignment where we want to take the company. This was of great value on two counts: Bill creates an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas they've not previously shared with senior management. Second, we identified real opportunities for improvement and growth. Opportunities that reflect collaborative thinking and are are thereby readily actionable. Bill's approach leverages a strategic process that yields valuable, unexpected findings.

Bill's passionate, intelligent, and personable: He leads you to insights, helps you understand the implications, and demonstrates how to make them meaningful. The result – significant and directional change in both your personal and professional life.”

--Joel Raznick, President, Co-Founder, OIC

"I have worked with my team for that last 10 years and we thought we knew each other pretty well. But after our short Ideation session with Bill Donius, our team gained tremendous insights about each other and our business. I have to admit that as an engineer by training, I was a bit skeptical going into a new process. But after our work together, his process opened the door to several new ideas, confirmed the validity of some ideas we already had, and generated some things we need to work on. With this new insight in hand, I am excited charge forward and execute. Thanks Bill for your help on a job well done!”

--Chuck G.

“I wanted to send a quick note to express my tremendous thanks for your participation in the event yesterday. Wow! What a day it was! The feedback has been incredible… the positive energy from the day just goes on and on. The information you shared about the methodology, and the insight you provided were appreciated by all! I wanted to say now, that it has been a pleasure and an honor to work with you and get to know you these past few months. Thank you again.”

--Caroline Bertani, Business Services Group, Insight and Productivity, Wells Fargo Advisors

“We’re in the creativity business as a firm that helps clients better understand their brand and how to translate it for better results. The innovative, creative process Bill took us through in a short, action packed four hours astonished my team of 32 people. Better yet, the results had a transformational effect on the firm, we literally got to a higher level, we claim, we’re now TOKY 2.0”

--Eric Thoelke, CEO, TOKY Branding+Design

“Because of my familiarity with Bill Donius’ corporate career here in St. Louis, I downloaded his book "Thought Revolution onto my Kindle. . Once I began to read the book I was enthralled. I went back and re-read chapters, completing the exercises and finally finishing the book. The actionable results I have obtained are amazing and the process has now become an enlightening pre-work-week exercise routine that is positively affecting my business…providing direction/pathways to problem solving I’d not have discovered were it not for “Thought Revolution”. Based on these results, I decided to reach out to to Bill to help me work through some business issues and all I can say is…WOW! Additionally, I am also a songwriter (on the side) and I am now experimenting with “right brain” thinking and how it opens creative doors and pathways for me with both lyrics and music. I highly, HIGHLY recommend “Thought Revolution” and Bill’s “right brain” principles to EVERYONE. Read this book and put Bill’s principles to work.”

--Scott Ragain, Founder/CEO, EG Radio Marketing/Constant Coverage – Regional Director

"If your business is looking for a thought provoking, soul searching, ground breaking opportunity to jar your results from where they are and take them to where you want them to be – get in front of Bill Donius immediately. When I first met Bill Donius and evaluated his process I was intrigued but skeptical. Could it really be this easy, when for so many businesses, success is so elusive? Bill took me through one simple exercise that forever wiped away my skepticism and made me a true believer. The sessions that followed changed forever the way we solve problems and think creatively about new products.”

I have conducted these sessions for small to global-sized organizations, for teams of as few as 4 and as many as 200 with impressive results.

“Bill’s unique process of discovery enabled a multi-generational group of alumni stakeholders to uncover key strategic themes that will serve as guideposts for the future direction of our Alumni Association. The session was not your typical, “seven strategies for success” strategic planning process; but rather allowed for ideas and insights to formulate creatively and organically, unbounded by traditional and more prescriptive brainstorming exercises. The result: a clearer direction for the future engagement of all alumni and a direct enhancement in the value of a Maryville education.”

The Science Behind What I Teach

Bill Donius is revolutionizing the way people think!

My work is primarily based on the research of two experts in this field, Nobel Prize winning Cal Tech professor Roger Sperry, MD, and Lucia Capacchione, Ph.D, ATR (Art Therapist Registered).

In the mid 1950s, Dr. Sperry demonstrated the lateralization of brain function by studying patients who had epileptic seizures. He discovered that when it comes to thinking, the left and right hemispheres of the brain each excel at a unique set of skills:

“…The left hemisphere reasoned sequentially, excelled at analysis, and handled words. The right hemisphere reasoned holistically, recognized patterns and interpreted emotions and nonverbal expressions. Human beings were literally of two minds.” – from Thought Revolution: How to Unlock Your Inner Genius

Lucia Cappacchione is the author of a number of books including, "Recovery of Your Inner Child" and "The Power of the Other Hand" in which she advocates healing through intuitive writing and drawing by tapping into the right hemisphere of the brain through the non-dominant hand.

My methods for applying neuroscientific findings of the past fifty years to personal and business problem solving have also been informed by Betty Edward's book, "Drawing with the Right Side of the Brain"; by Daniel Pink, author of several bestselling books including "A Whole New Mind", which delves into how right brain thinking can be used in business; and by several neuroscientists I mention in my book "Thought Revolution".

March 21, 2007 I was fortunate to be seated next to one of my heros at a small dinner in St. Louis in 2007 prior to his speech for the Maryville Speakers Series. Powell served with great distinction in each of his important roles as a U.S. Army General, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Commander of U.S. Army Forces, as well as 65th U.S. Secretary of State. He never wavered and managed to be highly respected by all.

  • Who Moved My Cheese?

December 10, 1985 Who Moved My Cheese was the book I shared with the management team of the bank after I became CEO. We were about to undergo lots of change in our industry and company. I brought it into one of my first management meetings and suggested everyone read it by the next meeting. (it’s a short read, just like my book). The book demonstrates that change is a fact of life and should be embraced.

Just as it is increasingly difficult to fly non-stop to your desired destination via the airlines, for most of us, it's nearly impossible to get to a fresh, innovative, different point of view about home and work via our traditional thought processes.  Read full article...

Why It’s Easier to Stay Stuck– and what to do about it.

Thursday, April 10, 2014

It’s simple. We prefer the familiar to the new. That doesn’t necessarily apply to shoes, but it does apply to our behavior. While this may sound counterintuitive, we’re reluctant to start that big assignment because it’s easier to tolerate the anguish, self doubt and denial than face up to why we haven’t started. Read full article...

How to find your creative genius. It’s in there.

Friday, April 04, 2014

Unlock Your Inner Genius.  This subtitle for my book was an intentional choice. The interviews I conducted for my research made it clear: there's more we can retrieve from our own brains about everything we're thinking about, interested in, and even worried about in life. I've not come across a better, more efficient way to do that than by learning how to activate the right brain to discover a truly unique point of view – your unique point of view.  Read full article...

7 Strategies for Being Human in a Digital Age

Monday, March 10, 2014

In many corporations and businesses today, the top positions in the business hierarchy are still occupied by those who have paid their dues for years before being able to advance up the organizational pyramid. In most instances, this has been the way of the business world since the dawn of the industrial era centuries ago. Is it possible that those who finally make it through the corporate grinder into the top ranks of corporate America, however, enter with some of their basic humanity missing? They have had to conform, be politically correct, and not upset the proverbial applecart too much in order to keep their membership active in this privileged, prestigious club of executives. Read full article...

Innovation In Education: Teachers As Learners

Friday, December 13, 2013

In mid-summer of 2012, I was invited to bring my methodology on innovation to a group of gifted teachers meeting in a classroom at the World Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis, Missouri. The program, underwritten by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, was sponsored by an entity known as CoLab. To my delight, I discovered that CoLab was way ahead of the curve, with a long history of bringing innovative teaching and learning styles into classrooms across America. I believe this story is worth sharing in light of the current controversy about how to improve the American educational system. Read full article...

Insights Learned by Session Participants

I have worked with my team for that last 10 years and we thought we knew each other pretty well. Thanks Bill for you help on a job well done!

Chuck G. (Ideation Session)

Because of my familiarity with Bill Donius’ corporate career here in St.

Be the hero of the conference room by learning a few easy techniques that you can apply during meetings, when you get stuck on a project or even in important decision making. Better yet - teach all of your colleagues the tricks you'll learn from my book 'Thought Revolution' to help save a little sanity and a lot of pointless meetings.

I was skeptical about this book at first. I didn't think that opening a passage to the right side of the brain would be so easy but it seriously is!!! I highly recommend this book for those who are looking to be more creative in their thinking...
